Working with an Interior Designer

What to Know When Hiring an Interior Designer

Interior designers make efficient use of the space in your home or office and decorate it according to your personal style and budget. They have a keen understanding of how you need to move through the room and how much activity will take place in the room. They design and decorate the space by drawing a complete blueprint and providing you with a clear vision of the final result. When you hire an interior designer you will want to know a few important things.

• Credentials – The interior designer of your choice should be accredited. This confirms that they have the proper education and experience to successfully provide interior design services. Interior designers are required to qualify and pass the NCIDQ exam, also known as the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications exam. Some states require interior designers to be licensed. In addition to these credentials, most interior designers are also members of the American Society of Interior Designers or the International Interior Design Association.

• Portfolio and Experience – Once you have verified the credentials of the interior designers you are interested in hiring, you will want to see their portfolio. Today, many interior designers have websites displaying their work. Carefully observe the details of each project they have displayed on their site. You should feel that they will be capable of creating the design you are seeking for your space. Also look into how long they have been in business and how many projects they have worked on within the time frame.

• References – Reach out to the references the interior designer provides for you. Also do an online search to see if there are any reviews from other clients. Always consider the opinions of past clients since they have dealt with the interior designer directly. It will give you insight to what you will be experiencing.

Remember an interior designer also needs to be capable of easily addressing issues and solving problems that may arise during the project. You will want to hire a professional that will treat you as an individual and who will be able to provide tailored design solutions. Learning more about the interior designer you may hire will allow you to feel confident in your choice.
